"You shall not commit adultery" Ex 20:14
"Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around Him, and He began to teach them. The teachers of the Law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?" They were using this question as a trap in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "Let anyone of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her." Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no-one condemned you?" "No-one, sir," she said. "Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin." John 8 1-11
God expects us to live lives that are pure and holy, faithful to Himself and others (Lev 11:45, 18). His commands are not burdensome (1John 5:3). He cares for us (1Peter 5:7), and gives us the ability to escape temptation & resist evil (Genesis 39, Hebrews 4 14-16, James 4:7). God wants our lives to follow His pattern - One man + One Woman, (Genesis 2 18-24) or singleness as God intends (Isaiah 56 1-7).
Pursuing/ involvement in any sexual behaviour before/outside of marriage is wrong (1Corinthians 6 12-20, Colossians 3-5, Ephesians 5:3, Galatians 5). The Bible says that anyone who commits adultery destroys himself. Proverbs 6:32.
As Christians we must not sin or compromise, but stay righteous (1Thessalonians 4 3-12). Spiritually we must remain faithful to God and those who are sent to care for us. Jeremiah 3:9, Matthew 5:28, Mark 10:11.
Read the above verses and use the lyrics/prayer below to ask God to help you to be faithful:
Above all powers above all kings
Above all nature and all created things
Above all wisdom and all the ways of man
You were here before the world began
Above all kingdoms above all thrones
Above all wonders the world has ever known
Above all wealth and treasure of the earth
There's no way to measure what You're worth
Crucified laid behind a stone
You lived to die rejected and alone
Like a rose trampled on the ground
You took the fall and thought of me
Above all
(Michael W Smith)
